Flickr is starting to suck

I’ll admit I haven’t jumped whole hog into the whole Flickr thing. I do have a Pro account, and yet most of my photos are still in my private gallery.

One of the main reasons, I think, is that, while I enjoy the whole idea of Flickr—a world of photographs naturally organized by keywords and shared (or not) between communities of like-minded people—a lot of the actual implementation kinda sucks. Oh sure, I was dazzled along with the rest when their AJAX-powered interface first came on the scene, with slick edit-in-place functionality and plenty of taggy goodness to explore. But whenever I actually want to do something with Flickr, the site quickly begins to get in my way.

Marble Madness Madness

Rolling Madness Screenshot Marble Madness is a game that has been on my mind a lot over the years, considering I have never actually played it.

Though it was first released in 1984 and was ported to the Apple IIe (my first computer) two years later, I first saw the game when it came to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. I’ve been wanting to play it ever since. A just-released free remake called Rolling Madness might allow me to do just that… if I ever get it working.

The Amen Break

This video reproduction of Nate Harrison’s installation, Can I Get An Amen? is a fascinating listen if you’re at all interested in music, copyright or the cultural aspects of creativity. The project charts the life so far of a six-second drum beat known as the Amen Break, which originated in the 1969 soul song Amen Brother by The Winstons, and has gone on to be used as a sample in hundreds of musical reincarnations, from the early UK dance scene to present day car ads.
